Parenting Classes - The Pros and Cons


So you’ve just learned you’re going to have a baby, congratulations! Being a mom can be very fulfilling but there are traps for the unwary. If this is your first baby, there are so many things you’ll need to know. So where do you go to find out about how to best care for your new baby?

There are plenty of parenting classes available today and you may be wondering if these are for you. What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking these classes? We’ll go in to these below and maybe make your decision a bit easier.

Now you may have had previous experience such as babysitting or looking after your friends’ kids. Trust me when I tell you this doesn’t even give you a vague idea of what parenting involves. Parenting is a huge responsibility and while it is very rewarding, you really need some knowledge up front to get you through from day to day. Parenting classes may be the answer you are looking for.

What will you learn? You’ll learn the knowhow on getting your baby to sleep, how to properly change a diaper and the right way to feed your baby. Parenting classes can provide hands on learning rather than just learning theory. You’ll get to practice handling a baby, although dolls are usually used for these sessions.

Will I be able to afford these classes? Most parenting classes have a variety of prices and formats so there’s every chance you’ll find one that you can afford. There are also free classes in some cities so you may find them by checking your local paper. These free classes are usually provided by nonprofit groups.

If you’re a first time mom with no family support, a real bonus for you is all the new moms you’ll meet in the same situation. These classes attract a large volume of of people so chances are you’ll make a heap of new friends who will be able to provide you with support when you need it.

There are disadvantages to everything and the problem with dealing with a class schedule is of course time. A lot of expectant moms work all day until just before the birth. Transport to and from classes may also be a problem for some moms. You need to consider these before rushing to join a class.

However, if you are able, I hope you will try these classes for yourself. I’m sure you’ll find these parenting classes invaluable as a first time mom. Apart from all the help and information, you’ll be able to meet new friends. Most importantly, you’ll be able to tackle the job of motherhood with new found confidence!
